The Senegal Date palm is a beautiful clumping pinnate-leaved palm that is common to central and eastern Africa, extending on into Madagascar and the Comoros Islands. It grows to 40 ft with 4-7 inch stems that are freely suckering. It gets its name from the fact that the stems are rarely straight, but lean out from the center of the cluster. It is very adaptable to many different habitats, but prefers wetter areas.
