Dioon spinulosum, native to Oaxaca and Veracruz, Mexico, belongs to a group of three species of Dioon known as the ‘tree dioons’ due to their massive size and tall trunks. This species is reported to reach a height  of over 50 feet. Its stems can grow to nearly 40 feet tall and 10 inches in diameter, its leaves are numerous and up to 6.6 feet long, gray-green in color, and gracefully arching. The species got its name ‘spinulosum’ from the leaflets which have spiny leaflet margins. It produces the largest seed cones of any cycad, reaching over 3 ft long and weighing up to 140 lbs. The cone is covered with dense white wooly indumentum and is completely hanging down at maturity. It is a trouble-free, fast growing species in South Florida.
