Borassus madagascariensis

Current bid: $10.00

Endemic to the dry western lowlands of Madagascar, this imposing fan palm is among the rarest members of the genus. It forms a robust solitary trunk reaching 65–80 feet in height and carries a full crown of large fan-shaped leaves borne on stout petioles armed with prominent black teeth. The large fruits ripen from green to yellow-brown and typically contain one or two massive seeds, occasionally three. Well adapted to seasonally dry tropical climates, this threatened species is highly sought after by collectors for its rarity and striking appearance. As with all Borassus, separate male and female trees are required for viable seed production.

Weight: 2 lb. 14 oz.
