Economic flowering shrub or small tree to 10-20′. Foliage medium green, heart-shaped; Flowers to 2″ wide, pinkish, resembling apple blossoms but with more stamens, in terminal clusters;
pods 1″ long, bristly, heart-shaped, inflated, green or red.
Fat-soluble reddish covering on seeds yields a red to yellow dye (depending on concentration) used in cooking and commercially to color cheese, rice, candy, etc.
