An endemic palm to the lowland forests of New Guinea, it grows to 80 feet with a thin columnar 4-10 inch stem topped by a 2 foot long crownshaft. Its 8-10 foot long, dark dull green pinnate leaves bear leaflets that lie in the same plane and terminate in truncated jagged tips. Its fruits are 1.5-2.5 x 1.5 inches in size.
