This clustering, fan-leaved species grows in Eastern Africa from Somalia to Mozambique and in Madagascar. The 30 foot long stems cluster from its base, but do not naturally branch afterwards. Petioles are heavily armed and fruits mature to a deep orange or light chestnut color. The genus is dioecious with male and female plants.
