This small cycad is endemic to the valley of the Umbeluzi River in Mozambique and Eswatini, where it grows in low deciduous forest and dry scrub. It has an unbranched, usually solitary subterranean stem and a crown of a few glossy bright green leaves, 1–2 m long, with toothed leaflets. It is a relatively slow-growing, frost-hardy species that grows best in light shade and is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
