Dictyosperma album

A native of the coastal forest of the Mascarene Islands, the hurricane or princess palm grows to 30-40 ft with a 6 inch diameter stem supported by a swollen base. The palm has a distinctive crownshaft and a rounded crown of pinnate leaves with dark green leaflets. The leaf rachis is slightly twisted to 90 degrees in the last third of its length. This species grows slow to moderately fast depending on growing conditions. It will adapt to full sun, but it likes partial shade and good, well-drained soils. Its rounded 1/2 inch fruits are deep purple to black.
