This fan palm has round palmate-leaves with silvery undersides and is armed with specialized stiff root-spines on its stem. It is a native of Mexico and Central America and grows to a height of 30 feet with a 4-5 inch diameter stem. It is a water-lover that prefers rich soils, but does well in sand if fertilized and mulched. Its beautiful 6 ft wide leaves on long petioles make it an attractive addition to any garden.
