Corypha utan

This huge fan palm is well distributed from Eastern India, throughout SE Asia to the Philippines and to N Australia. It grows to 90 ft with a stem nearly 3 ft. in diameter. Its costa-palmate leaf blades are nearly 20 ft. wide and supported on stout 8-10 ft. petioles. Like most palms in this genus it only flowers once ending its long 60-80 life span with an enormous terminal panicle producing thousands of green to brown fruits. It is adaptable to most soils but does best in well drained fertile soils with adequate moisture.
