Couroupita guianensis
Cannonball Tree
Large evergreen flowering tree to 100’+. Flowers to 3″ long, ruddy in color, 5-petaled, with many brisly stamens and pistils in center, held on long, vine-like, woody stems,
fragrant at night (attracts bats and nocturnal bees).
Fruit a 1′ diameter round woody capsule that falls to the ground with a loud report when ripe, giving the tree its common name (though probably useless as an artillery shell).
