Indigenous to SW Brazil, N. Argentina, SE Bolivia and W. Paraguay, it grows along streams throughout its dry lowland chaco habitat. Its clustering stems grow to 20 ft and are armed with spiney leaf sheaths. Its attractive silvery light green fan leaves have long, very narrow airy-looking leaf segments. The palm tolerates full sun to partial shade.
