Economically important tree to 25′. Foliage simple to 1′ long, glossy green, drooping and pink when young. Flowers pale pink or whitish, insignificant, cauliflorous;
fruit yellow (or red in some vars.), about the size and shape of a Nerf football, full of large seeds in a whitish pulp. The ground seeds are dried, fermented, roasted,
and ground into cocoa powder, which can be used as is or mixed with milk, cream, and sugar to make chocolate.
